buen viaje - lago cuicocha - cotacachi

josh's mom, bobbi, came to visit us last month and for 2 weeks we traveled through the country seeing as much as we could in a short time. one of our visits was to lago cuicoacha in cotacachi, about a half hour from our house. we visited it with a couple in a neighboring congregation, jeff and robin, who are a ton of fun, and were 2 of our first friends here in ecuador. we took a boat ride to learn a little bit about the lake. one fun fact (by "fun" i mean "slightly terrifying") is that this crater lake is still active. our little boat ride gave us an up close and personal look at the bubbles from the escaping volcanic gases. the lake is 2 miles wide and its name comes from the kichwa indigenous language and means "lago del cuy" or "guine pig lake" in english. it was given this name due to the guinea pig shape of the largest island in the middle of the laguna, and supposedly these little critters also live on the islands and around the lake.

look at us nerds!

just a little volcanic gas escaping - nothing to be afraid of!
