we went to arenal and saw the volcano erupting (no photos, sorry!). we also hung out in the natural hot springs, which was much needed after our hike of cerro chato. chato is an old, now inactive volcano. we were told by this guy at our hotel that the hike was 8 hours long, and that we needed to hire a guide (super pricey) and that if we didnt it would be "disaster"! so we were like, ok forget that.... we headed to a super short hike to a waterfall instead. while there we talked to someone else who told us that it would not be disaster, but would be just fine as long as we stayed on the well marked trail, and that it was only 2 hours up and 2 hours back. the cool thing is that at the top, there is a lake in the crater! so we decided to do it! chato is about 3740 feet high and the hike was pretty much straight up the whole time. it was really misty once we got into the forest and it the temperature really dropped as we got closer to the top.

above, photos of our hike up. below, photos of us at the lake at the summit.

on our drive from arenal to monteverde we saw this cute little baby kuwatie! (i am totally spelling that wrong, i have no clue how to spell it, but thats how you say it!). hunter fed him animal crackers.

we also got a great view of lake arenal, and saw this super cute hotel that looked just like it should be in switzerland:

some pix from monteverde. yes, we got another flat tire! that would be our 3rd! rental cars hate us.

we caught a pretty sunset at the beach:

lastly, we went horseback riding to a beautiful overlook. so much fun! shelby's horse was the only girl, and she liked to kick, so she had to be in the back of the pack. but my horse liked her horse, so the 2 of them had to be together, because if anyone got between them, my horse would kick! we managed to survive without incident! when we got back to the farm, we helped unsaddle the horses and wash them and led them out to the pasture. so much fun!
